Additional skilled construction workers needed to meet demand for labor nation-wide

The United States’ workforce has slowly been recovering from COVID, which saw unemployment rates multiply exponentially in a matter of months. While many industries have been able to adjust post-pandemic, the construction industry has yet fully to bounce back. According to the Association of Builders and Contractors’ 2022 workforce shortage analysis, the construction industry desperately needs qualified, skilled craft professionals to build America. Their models indicate that the construction industry will need to attract nearly 650,000 additional workers on top of the normal pace of hiring in 2022 to meet the demand for labor.

We want to help Lake County’s workforce and construction industry thrive by preparing our young adults to work on site with state-of-the-art techniques and equipment. We are implementing several new and exciting program features to ready our members for an exciting and successful career in the trade of their choice.

What We're Doing About It

Our staff has been hard at work developing a new strategy to improve our construction program in 2023. We are excited to announce that in 2023, YouthBuild Lake County will be creating an indoor construction lab to help education and training continue year-round. This investment will give our Career Readiness program & Pre-Apprentice program the room necessary to grow in various building trades. Additionally, in 2023 we will be offering a Building Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship program. Both of these program additions will grow YBLC’s impact on Lake County’s workforce.

These Additions Will Impact Our Youth

The addition of both an indoor construction lab and our new apprentice program will provide new training opportunities for Lake County residents. The need for these program offerings were identified by our Board of Directors, staff members, and specially created task forces to provide training in high-demand industries in Lake County.

Certain elements of construction are slowed or halted during the winter months. This new construction lab will help our members gain the best training possible, regardless of weather. This will also improve attendance and morale.

The construction site looks very different today than it did 10 years ago. We want the equipment our members train on to reflect the same. This new lab will include a budget for state of the art equipment to better prepare our young adults.

The new construction lab, as well as the new apprentice program, will prepare more skilled construction workers than ever. We hope to prepare and develop over 100 young adults for the workforce in 2023.

“An indoor construction lab is an amazing idea! We can keep gaining hands on experience year round without stopping because of weather. Overall it will be extremely helpful for our productivity.”
