YouthBuild Lake County (YBLC) is committed to transforming lives by providing young adults with the education, training, and support they need to build a better future. We recognize that each individual’s journey is unique, and to meet the diverse needs of our community, we offer three specialized programs. These programs are designed to cater to various stages of personal and professional development, whether participants are working towards earning their high school diploma, preparing to enter the workforce, or seeking to enhance their skills through apprenticeships.
YouthBuild Program: Building Foundations for a Brighter Future
The YouthBuild Program is at the heart of what YBLC stands for, providing comprehensive support to young adults aged 17-24 who are determined to earn their high school diploma and secure a path toward a successful career. This program is tailored for individuals who have not yet completed high school and are residents of Lake County, with a focus on those from low-income backgrounds. The YouthBuild Program is more than just a path to a diploma – it provides participants with the education, training, and life skills necessary to become gainfully employed and build better futures for themselves and their families.
Participants in this program receive high school diploma attainment services, coupled with career coaching and placement support. The program offers specialized training in industries such as construction, healthcare, and new opportunities in solar energy, providing participants with industry-recognized credentials that pave the way for sustainable careers.
Beyond the technical skills, the YouthBuild Program emphasizes the importance of soft skills, such as communication and interviewing, ensuring that graduates are well-rounded and prepared for the workforce. Additionally, participants benefit from job shadowing, internships, and work experiences that further enhance their readiness for post-secondary education or full-time employment. The program also addresses the well-being of its participants through wellness services, including counseling and nutrition support, recognizing that a strong foundation in health is crucial for success.
Pre-apprenticeship Program: Bridging the Gap to Skilled Trades
The Pre-apprenticeship Program is designed for individuals aged 18 and older who have already earned their high school diploma and are ready to take the next step towards a career in the skilled trades. This program is open to all Illinois residents and serves as a bridge to registered apprenticeship programs in construction and related trades. Unlike the YouthBuild Program, which focuses on educational attainment and broad career preparation, the Pre-apprenticeship Program is specifically geared towards those who are ready to enter the workforce but require additional resources and guidance to do so.
Participants in this 10-week program receive ongoing case management services, which include access to transportation, technology, and referrals for additional support. These resources are critical in helping participants overcome barriers to employment and succeed in their chosen fields. The program prepares individuals for entry into Department of Labor-registered apprenticeship programs through partnerships with local employers, setting them on a clear path to professional advancement.
Since its inception in May 2022, the Pre-Apprentice Program has served 85 individuals, providing them with the tools and connections they need to secure meaningful employment in the trades.
Facility Maintenance and Repair Apprenticeship Program: Securing Sustainable Careers
The Facility Maintenance and Repair Apprentice Program is YBLC’s newest initiative, launched earlier this month to provide hands-on training and secure full-time employment for participants interested in facility maintenance and repair. This Department of Labor-approved registered apprenticeship program is designed for individuals aged 18 and older who have completed high school and are seeking a structured pathway to a sustainable career. The program stands out for its emphasis on securing employment with local employers who are committed to the professional development and advancement of their apprentices.
Spanning 18 months, the Facility Maintenance and Repair Apprentice Program combines classroom instruction provided by YBLC with on-the-job training facilitated by employer partners. Participants earn industry credentials while gaining practical experience, ensuring that they are job-ready upon completion of the program. The program began with a small cohort, reflecting YBLC’s commitment to providing personalized support and attention to each apprentice. By the end of the program, participants not only gain valuable skills and experience but also have the opportunity for permanent employment with their training employers, securing a stable and prosperous future.
CONCLUSION
YouthBuild is continually growing our program offerings to impact more lives. The emphasis on accessible, innovative training programs will not only prepare participants for in-demand careers but also foster a culture of lifelong learning and civic engagement. This expansion is a commitment to building a resilient local economy and a cohesive community, embodying North Chicago’s and Lake County’s visions for growth and inclusivity.
